About The Clubs

The Algoma Retriever Club was formed in 1957 and incorporated in 1963. In the early years, the club had a close working relationship with the Alpena Michigan club. Because of the great distance to southern Ontario, the Sault club members travelled to Michigan and held annual challenge trials with the Alpena club. In the early sixties, the club purchased 40 acres of prime trial grounds for $5000. Licensed field trials have been hosted by the Algoma Club each year since 1958. In 1965, the Canadian National Retriever Championships were hosted by the Algoma Retriever Club.

The Northern Ontario Retriever Association developed from a Tri-Clubs Group, which was originally formed between Sudbury, Sault Ste Marie, and North Bay to co-ordinate picnic trials and an annual Little National trail and to enhance the sport in Northern Ontario. NORA formally came into being in 1979 with four member clubs Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins & North Bay. Subsequently, the Lakehead Retriever Club and Temiskaming Retriever Club joined NORA. The 1983 Canadian Retriever Championship Stake was hosted by NORA in Sudbury^[1] .
